To help us achieve our objectives we work with like-minded organisations to provide a range of advice, confidence building courses and awareness raising techniques to help keep YOU safe.
We have been providing personal safety courses throughout the U.K. since 1997 – from Thurso in the North to London in the South, Aberdeen in the East to Blackpool and Ullapool in the West – and we have an array of instructors, male and female, to suit your needs.
We have 6 Trustees on our Board:
Alan Bell – Executive Manager
Alan is the founder of The Scottish Centre for Personal Safety and has been in management since 1986 within various sectors including the hotel, leisure and entertainment industry. He brings these skills alongside his knowledge of personal safety, first aid and practical self defence training to his role as Executive Manager.
Deirdre Oakley – Chair
Deirdre is a Community Education Worker for North Ayrshire Council and also a part time Coast Rescue Officer with HM Coastguard. She has also been a personal safety / self defence instructor since 2008 and brings all this diverse experience to her role as Chairperson of our charity.
Kevin Fawcett – Secretary
Kevin is currently employed as the Operations Officer for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in the West of Scotland, based in North Ayrshire and supporting Councils, Groups, Schools and voluntary organisations to deliver the DofE to over 40,000 young people taking part in Scotland.
He has over 25 years of working and volunteering in the youth sector, starting with the St John Ambulance Brigade in County Durham and moving into their youth team there. He continued with his work in the Scottish Borders before settling into his various roles with the DofE in Ayrshire.
During this period he has worked for local authorities, charities and the voluntary sector before running his own business providing practical advice, coaching and training in Health & Safety and First Aid within the voluntary, NHS and SME business sectors.
Jacqueline Copley – Trustee
After a career in music, corporate and TV video production, Jacqueline is now partner in a company specialising in residential property renovation. Working with schools and sports clubs throughout Scotland, she has spent over 10 years working in the voluntary sector helping to raise funds for a variety of causes.
Brenda Walker – Trustee
Brenda’s career has spanned across the Statutory, Private and Voluntary Sectors.
Over the last 20 years she has held several posts including Third Sector Funding and Sustainability Officer for a Local Authority; Services Manager for a Charity that worked with adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse; Chief Executive of a Volunteer Centre; and European Manager for a large Scottish Partnership.
For the last 4 years, Brenda has held the post of Senior Officer – Adult Support and Protection with North Ayrshire Council (Health and Social Care Partnership) providing strategic direction in relation to supporting and protecting Adults at Risk of Harm throughout North Ayrshire.
Jess Belshaw – Trustee
Jess’s career has been firmly based in Child Protection.
She spent 30 years in Social Work rising to Team Manager level where she managed a team of up to 9 Social Workers and Assistants whilst supervising their case load of services to children and families.
Jess then spent 7 years as LAAC (Looked After and Accommodated Children ) Review Coordinator chairing both LAAC Reviews and Child Protection Case Conferences.
And since retiring, Jess has become an Independent Assessor for Adoption and Fostering Assessments.
