Barony St. John Centre

Our Barony St. John Centre is our first physical “Centre” for Personal Safety in Scotland. We took out a long-term lease for these premises in December 2014.

It is situated on Ardrossan’s seafront, on the corner of Princes Street and Arran Place.

Built in 1889, the hall building is now being utilised as our charity’s location. The Barony St John Centre, as it is now called, consists of:

  • Our main Hall (our evening timetable is linked below). Two thirds of this hall is matted and, when not in use by the charity, is rented out to various community groups in the evenings and weekends. The remaining third of the hall contains a fully-equipped gym which is used by our clients and instructors as well as participants of evening and weekend classes.
  • Our Training Room is where we run First Aid courses from as well as Personal Safety talks and, when we are not using it, it is rented out to various community groups for small meetings, training courses and evening classes.
  • Our Barony Café has seating for twenty people indoors and a further thirty six outdoors.
  • Our Office room is a place where anyone can pop in for a chat with our Executive Manager, arrange to view the Centre or book one of our rooms.
  • And we have a  Reception / Kitchen area.

Fundraising throughout 2015 helped us to renovate the toilets and corridor area of our Barony St. John Centre and fully equip our main Training Hall, allowing us to open to the public in August 2016.

In 2017, we received funding to re-build and equip our Training Room. The ‘before’ and ‘after’ photos below show you the extent of the renovation works needed and completed.

In 2018, we renovated our Reception / Kitchen area – again the ‘before’ and ‘after’ photos show you the vast improvements made.

In 2021, we received a small grant from The Robertson Trust and a large grant from the Scottish Government’s Community Climate Asset Fund (CCAF) to completely renovate our Training Hall.

The CCAF grant allowed us to replace the deteriorating arched windows, install LED lights and sensors, repair the floor joists, install destratification fans and heating controls, replace fallen roof tiles, repair external stonework and repair and repoint the entire hall room.

These energy saving works enabled us to reduce our local carbon emissions by making a 10.2 ton reduction in our CO2 emissions. They also cut our fuel bills.

The photos below will give you an idea of the difference this funding has made to our Centre.

In 2024, we raised enough money to demolish our existing lean-to storage room in our Centre’s courtyard, and build a café extension.

Our wellbeing café – The Barony Café – was opened in June 2025. The photos below will show you what a difference it has made.

We cannot thank our funders enough.

Many thanks.
